Association of American Railroads LogoThe railroad industry and DOE have agreed to move the railroads' voluntary efforts to EPA's SmartWay Transport Partnership, which has as its focus surface transportation.

In the transportation sector, EPA's SmartWay Transport Partnership is a voluntary program aimed at reducing emissions from the freight sector through the implementation of innovative technologies and advanced management practices. To date, about 430 companies and organizations have joined the partnership and have committed to reduce the CO2 emissions associated with their freight operations. Additionally, there are now more than 50 diesel truck and locomotive engine-idling reduction projects across the United States.
