Cooperative Study of Magnesium Melt Protection Technologies: Emissions Characterization and Occupational Exposure. (PDF 275 KB)
EPA Conference on SF6 and the Environment (2006) presentation by Holger Brandt, Lunt Manufacturing, and Scott Bartos, U.S. EPA.

The Alternatives to SF6 for Magnesium Melt Protection brochure, published in Chinese, English, and Japanese language versions, was first introduced to the industry and public at the 63rd Annual World Magnesium Conference in Beijing, China on May 21, 2006. EPA collaborated with the International Magnesium Association (IMA), China Magnesium Association (CMA), and Japan Magnesium Association (JMA) to write and publish this technical brochure discussing climate-friendly magnesium melt protection technologies.

Characterization of Cover Gas Emissions from U.S. Magnesium Die Casting (PDF 626 KB)
This study of magnesium cover gas technologies and emissions to air is a product of the Australian / U.S. Climate Action Partnership. One of EPA's magnesium die casting partner companies, Intermet, graciously hosted the production scale study at its Hannibal and Palmyra, Missouri sites in October 2003. Magnesium industry suppliers, Advanced Magnesium Technologies, the Cooperative Research Centre for Cast Metal Manufacturing (CAST), and 3M™, contributed to the success of the project by providing cover gases and sharing their technical expertise.

Measured SF6 Emissions From Magnesium Die Casting Operations
by S. Bartos, J. Marks, R. Kantamaneni, and C. Laush (PDF 174 KB)
This paper was presented at The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society's (TMS) 132nd Annual Conference, held in San Diego, California in March of 2003. The paper describes a study conducted at Product Technologies, one of EPA's magnesium die casting partners, to measure SF6 degradation and by-products in typical hot-chambered die casting equipment.

The International Program to Identify Alternatives to SF6 for Magnesium Melt Protection (PDF 2.2 MB)
November 2002. Presentation by James Hillis, Noranda Magnesium.

The International Program to Identify Alternatives to SF6 for Magnesium Melt Protection (PDF 325 KB)
November 2002. Paper by James Hillis, Noranda Magnesium. Presented at the International Conference on SF6 and the Environment: Emission Reduction Strategies

Update on EPA's Magnesium Industry Partnership for Climate Protection (PDF 151 KB)
This paper was presented by Scott Bartos at The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society's (TMS) 131st Annual Conference, held in Seattle, Washington in February of 2002. The paper briefly describes the issues surrounding climate change and the Magnesium Industry, and gives an overview of the SF6 Emission Reduction Partnership for the Magnesium Industry.
