WASHINGTON D.C., April 22, 2003 — On Tuesday, April 22, Helmut Brandt of Lunt Manufacturing Co., Inc., on behalf of the EPA - Magnesium Partnership and the International Magnesium Association, presented an update of the SF6 reduction activities at the Earth Technologies Forum in Washington, D.C. The partnership was established in 1999 to monitor and reduce the use of SF6 in the magnesium industry and has so far obtained a 42% decrease in its use. Of particular interest was that members of the partnership agreed in 2002 to completely eliminate the use of SF6 by 2010 as part of President Bush's "Climate VISION" (Voluntary Innovative Sector Initiatives: Opportunities Now) program. This commitment was the result of activities that the magnesium industry began in 1995 when it first began studying ways to reduce SF6 usage.
The Earth Technologies Forum is the preeminent conference and exhibition on global climate change and ozone protection technologies and policies and is an international event.
The International Magnesium Association was founded in 1943 to promote the use of the metal magnesium in material selection and encourage innovative applications of the versatile metal.
Lunt Manufacturing Co., Inc. was founded in 1973 by Helmut Brandt to produce high quality magnesium die castings. Today, Lunt serves the automotive, power tool, recreational and electronic markets worldwide and is one of the largest consumers of magnesium alloy in the world.
