Texas Technology Showcase Puts President's Climate Initiative Into Action
HOUSTON, TEXAS, March 17, 2003 — The Department of Energy (DOE) today opened the Texas Technology Showcase—the first in its series of activities designed to support the President's bold climate initiative announced last month. DOE joins the Texas Industries of the Future and seven leading industrial facilities in the Houston-Galveston area in hosting the three-day showcase at the Radisson Astrodome in Houston.
Showcase attendees will learn about innovative technologies and practices for reducing energy use and emissions in the chemical and refining industries. The technologies represent the types of cost-effective innovations that the President's Climate VISION (Voluntary, Innovative Sector Initiatives: Opportunities Now) initiative seeks to promote in all sectors of a growing U.S. economy.
"This showcase is a shining example of what can be achieved through the application of advanced technology, best energy management practices and collaborative public-private partnerships," Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy David Garman said in his opening remarks at the plenary session. "I commend the companies hosting this showcase for demonstrating the kind of industry leadership needed to successfully meet the climate challenge."
DOE is the lead agency for developing and coordinating Climate VISION partnerships among multiple federal offices and private industry. Under the initiative, many U.S. industries and associations have already made voluntary commitments to improve energy efficiency or reduce greenhouse gas emissions by specified amounts over the next decade. The initiative also promotes sharing of the best ideas and technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving energy efficiency.
DOE conducts technology showcases to foster increased energy efficiency across all sectors of the economy. The Texas Technology Showcase for the chemical and refining industries features technologies in use at seven host companies: Calpine, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, The Dow Chemical Company, Exxon Mobil, Merisol USA, Rohm and Haas Texas, and Valero Energy Corporation. Eleven regional, state, and local organizations are also sponsoring the event. Technical sessions, information booths, and plant tours provide information on innovative, energy-efficiency technologies, several of which emerged from collaborative research and development partnerships cost-shared by the Energy Department. Many of the featured technologies reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides, which are of particular concern in the Houston-Galveston area as precursors to ozone formation.
