RE: Climate Challenge Program Participation
Dear Secretary O'Leary:
Waverly Light and Power, serving 4,000 customers in N.E. Iowa, agrees to
participate in the Climate Challenge Program. The following list identifies the
actions that our utility has taken since 1991, or will take by the year 2000 to
reduce or prevent greenhouse gas emissions:
- Trees Forever Program/Tree Power
Planting 6,000 trees by the year 2000.
4,500 have been planted since 1991
Saving 405.8 tons of CO2/year
- Good Cents Home (New &
amp; Improved) Program
Saving 89,250 Kwh, 3604.8 MCF/year and 284.6 tons CO2/.
- Wind Turbine
Installed in 1993, saving 120,000 Kwh/year and 191.2 tons of CO2/year.
- Hydro Units Preservation
Rebuild of units in 1991 saving 2,000,000 Kwh/year and 1686 tons of
CO2/year.
- Distribution System Upgrade
Conversion of electric distribution system from 2.4 to 12.5 KV, saving
940,000 Kwh/year and 923.4 tons of CO2/year.
- Low Loss Transformers
Exclusive use of low loss transformers as replacements with 90% Kwh/year
and 56.6 tons of CO2/year.
- High Pressure Sodium Lights
Completed conversion of all municipal lights in 1993, saving 615,275 Kwh/year
and 363.1 tons of CO2/year.
- Electric Vehicle
Saving 3,000 miles/year, 136.4 gallons of gas and 1.3 tons of CO2/year.
- Appliance and HVAC Rebates
Saving a total of 389,370 Kwh/year and 328.2 tons of CO2/year.
- Lighting Rebates
Saving 104,637 Kwh/year and 88.2 tons of CO2/year
- Utility Programs providing or subsidizing compact flourescents, water heater
blankets, low flow shower and faucet adaptors, and insulation socket
sealers.
Saving 2,321 tons of CO2/year.
Waverly Light and Power expects that the combination of these actions will
reduce or prevent annual emissions of 6559.5 tons of carbon dioxide in the year
2000. Furthermore, Waverly Light and Power will report annually to the
Department of Energy on the activities and achievements under the Climate
Challenge Program.
