Re: Climate Challenge Program Participation

Dear Secretary O'Leary:

South Norwalk Electric Works agrees to participate in the Climate Challenge Program. The following list identifies the actions that our utility has taken since 1991, or will take by the year 2000 to reduce or prevent greenhouse gas emissions. More specific information regarding these programs will be provided at a later date

Tree Planting Program

SNEW will be distributing a variety of seedlings appropriate to our geographical characteristics

Demand-Side Management

    * Commercial and condominium common area lighting efficiency audits and funding for replacement equipment.
    * Residential Water Heater Program - SNEW provides and installs radio control equipment.

Generation

    * Conversion from diesel to Co-fired Generation Units

Transmission and Distribution System Improvements

    * Low-loss transformers

    * Reconductoring distribution system

    * Transmission system construction

Fleet Upgrade

    * SNEW is a stakeholder in the City of Norwalk, CT Clean Cities Program and intends to replace existing gasoline powered vehicles with electric vehicles

South Norwalk Electric Works expects that the combination of these actions will reduce or prevent annual emissions of approximately 390 tons of carbon dioxide in the year 2000 Furthermore, South Norwalk Electric Works will report annually, on a form provided by the Department of Energy/Energy Information Administration, on activities and achievements under the Climate Challenge Program.
