SECRETARY
U S DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY

Re: Climate Challenge Program Participation
Dear Secretary O'Leary:
Murray City Power Department is excited to be part of the Climate Challenge
Program. As part of Murray City Power Department's Mission Statement, we have
committed ourselves to make environmentally sound decisions. Over the years,
we feel we have done that.
The following lists identify some of the actions that our utility has taken
that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Tree Planting Program
Murray City Power Department has been a Tree City USA for the past 17
consecutive years. We plant approximately 500 trees per year. We have planted
approximately 10,000 trees over the past 17 years. We were one of the charter
members of the APPA Tree Power Program and have committed to plant at least one
tree for every electric customer within the boundaries of Murray City, Utah.
We have 15,000 customers.
Demand-side Management
Murray City Power Department offers free residential and commercial energy
audits for all of our electrical customers. We are also actively participating
in education partnerships with the Murray School District in three different
programs. They are entitled Kid Power, Energy Patrols, and In Concert With The
Environment. Murray feels that if we expect our citizens to make wise energy
decisions in the future, we must be involved in their education today.
Generation
Murray City has recently undergone efficiency improvements for a 4.9 MW
hydroelectric power plant that was originally built in 1913
Transmission and Distribution System Improvements
Murray City has rebuilt three distribution substations over the last several
years, using state-of-the-art and low-loss equipment. When we purchase
distribution transformers, we use life-cycle costing and loss-loss transformer
requirements. Murray City is involved in a power factor program which
significantly reduces line losses throughout our distribution system.
Murray City Power Department will continue in its efforts to responsibly manage
its power system in an environmentally advanta- geous manner.
Sincerely,
MURRAY CITY POWER DEPARTMENT
