The Honorable Hazel O'Leary RE: Climate Challenge Program Participation Dear Secretary O'Leary: The Mora Municipal Utilities, even though it is a very small utility, agrees to do its part and participate in the Climate Challenge Program. The following list described action we have taken since 1991, or will take by 2000 to reduce or prevent greenhouse gas emissions. TREE PLANTING PROGRAM Beginning in 1993, when we planted one tree for every citizen of our town, we have planned and budgeted a replacement tree program of approximately 1,000 trees per year. (See attached list.) Demand Side Management Load Management-In 1991 we instituted a Load Management Program, which controls electric water heaters and air conditioners. We will average a savings of 57 KwH/month by 2000. Commercial/Industrial Lighting, A/C, and Motor Program Beginning this year we are offering rebates for upgrades to high efficiency lighting, a/c, and motors. We anticipate a savings of 135 KwH/month by 2000. Transmission and Distribution We plan the installation of a high efficiency electrical substation in 1996. We have planned savings of $7 MW/year.
The Mora Municipal Utilities expects that the combination of these actions will reduce or prevent annual emissions of 46 tons of carbon dioxide in the year 2000. Furthermore, we will report annually, on a form provided by the Department of Energy/Energy Information Administration, on activities and achievements under the Climate Challenge Program. Sincerely,
